RIT Stops Men's Soccer, 2-1

Devon Baughen scores his fourth goal, but Engineers fall in Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) men's soccer team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 2-1 in Liberty League action from Tiger Stadium Friday afternoon. Mike Reverdatto and Anthony DeFeo each scored for the Tigers (4-3-2, 1-0-1 Liberty League), while Devon Baughen had the lone tally for the Engineers (2-5-2, 0-1-0 Liberty League).

Rensselaer had two good chances early in the first half on shots from Vito Mesiti and Dylan Weitz in the tenth minute. Mesiti fired a shot from inside RIT's six-yard area that goalkeeper Peter Cinibulk turned aside. The rebound came to Weitz, but his shot was blocked away by a Tigers defender.

Reverdatto had a great chance in the 15th minute, but his shot was turned aside by Ryan Nealon. The rebound came to DeFeo who sailed his shot over the top of the crossbar.

Gabe El-Ghandour had an opportunity halfway through the first half when he fired a shot off a free kick. Cinibulk was there again for the save and keep the game scoreless.

The Tigers finally broke through in the 40th minute on Reverdatto's first goal of the season. Finding himself with space inside the RPI penalty area, he fired a shot that deflected off a sprawling Nealon and in to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at halftime.

RIT made it 2-0 on DeFeo's goal in the 51st minute. Simon Garno started the play when he freed Alex Ptucha down the flank with a well-timed ball. Ptucha sent a service into the Rensselaer penalty box that DeFeo finished with a hard shot, for his first of the season.

Rensselaer got back a goal in the 70th minute when Baughen scored off an assist from Tim Stevens. The marker was his team-leading fourth of the season.

Final shots were 11-10 in favor of RIT, with each team earning six corner kicks. Cinibulk got the win in net for RIT, making seven saves. Ryan Nealon got the start for Rensselaer, making three saves in the first half. Matt LaBranche played the second half and made one save.

RPI visits Hobart tomorrow afternoon (2pm). The Tigers also return to action tomorrow when they host Skidmore (2pm).
