SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's swimming & diving team increased its dual meet winning streak to 15 straight in dramatic fashion as the Engineers won the final event for a 128-115 victory over Union College. The RPI women also defeated Union, winning eight events on their way to a 139-101 victory.
The men's matchup came down to the final event, the 200 free relay and the team of Spencer Marquardt, Justin Chang, Andrew Klobucher and John Alberta touched the wall first, finishing in 1:29.02. Union's relay came in less than a second later, at 1:29.30. The Engineers are now 6-0 in dual meets this year.Â
Chang and Alberta, along with Noah Pan and Richard Dong, got Rensselaer off to a strong start as they won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:39.04. Trevor Maxfield then won the 1000 free (10:09.58) before Klobucher, a captain, captured the 100 free in 48.73. Pan was then victorious in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.07.
The women's team, which is now 5-1, got individual wins from five different student-athletes with
Jessica Sauve,
Danielle Sauve and
Jessica Kugelman each winning twice.
Jessica Sauve won the 1000 free (10:51.81) and the 500 free (5:16.13), while her twin sister captured the 200 (1:56.07) and 100 (54.33) freestyle.
Kugelman, a freshman, garnered 239.25 points to win off the 1 meter board and 243.45 points to take the win from 3 meters.
Shanny Lin (2:07.28 in 200 fly) and
Siena Sara (2:27.53 in 200 breast) also won events in Friday's action.
RPI returns to the pool on Saturday when both teams compete in the RPI Kumpf Invitational at Robison Pool beginning at noon.Â
