TROY, N.Y. – A balanced scoring attack led the fifth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Saints improve to 21-3-2 (12-2-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 9-17-2 (6-9-1 ECAC Hockey).
Five different players scored for St. Lawrence, including senior Brooke Webster's (Aurora, ON) game-opening tally at 5:04 of the first period. Junior Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, BC) picked up the lone assist.
Rensselaer drew even at 1-1, just 32 seconds into the second, when senior
Katie Rooney (Buffalo, MN/Buffalo High School) buried a rebound at the left post for her second goal of the season. Junior
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH/Assabet Academy) threw the puck in front of the net and it deflected to Rooney for the finish. Senior captain
Laura Horwood (Belleville, ON/Durham West Lightning) also had an assist on the play.
Sophomore Justine Reyes (Chino Hills, CA) gave the visitors back the lead (2-1) at 5:07 of the second, taking a feed from classmate Kayla Nielsen (Laguna Hills, CA) to put home her 10th goal of the year.
Tomlinson answered for the Engineers to tie the score at 2-2. Working the puck around the offensive zone, senior
Hannah Behounek (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka High School) fired towards goal. Tomlinson waiting at the front of the net to put home her third goal of the campaign at 13:52.
The game did not remain even long, as junior Kennedy Marchment (Courtice, ON) put St. Lawrence up for good, just 11 seconds later.
Junior blueliner Amanda McClure (Stratord, ON) netted a power play goal from a tight angle at 7:36 of the third, doubling the Saints advantage (4-2). Freshman Kayla Vespa (Hamilton, ON) capped the scoring with an empty-netter at 19:34.
Sophomore netminder Grace Harrison (Auckland, New Zealand) finished with 16 saves for the Saints, while RPI sophomore
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) had 34 stops at the other end of the ice.
Rensselaer finished 2 for 6 on the power play, while SLU was 1 for 6.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow afternoon, when they host No. 5 St. Lawrence University (3pm). Clarkson visits Union tomorrow (3pm).
