ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 69-37 victory over Bard College in a Liberty League game on Tuesday night.
RPI improved to 7-14 overall, 2-10 in the Liberty League; Bard fell to 0-18, 0-10.
Both teams started slowly, as RPI led 9-4 after one quarter. But the Engineers turned it up on both ends of the court in the second quarter, outscoring Bard, 18-5. The Raptors were held to nine first-half points and had 16 turnovers at the break. Also, RPI had 14 offensive rebounds built into a 28-18 rebounding advantage.
After the Raptors cut an 18-point deficit to 13 midway through the third quarter, RPI put the game away with a 14-0 run to end the third stanza, taking a 52-25 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the end, RPI enjoyed a 57-33 rebounding edge, including 30 offensive boards.
Shaina Iton (Peekskill, NY) led the winners with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Elizabeth Eckhardt (Albany, NY) added 13 points, while
Ines Ortea (Madrid, Spain) and
Sam Krumbhaar (Glen Burnie, MD) added nine points apiece.
Bard was led by Annie Kissel (Springfield, MA), who had 10 points and six rebounds.
Up next for RPI is a road game at Union a week from Friday night at 6.
