TROY, N.Y. - Senior Joe Escamilla was credited with the game-winning goal to lead the Hobart College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Statesmen improve to 6-2-4 overall (4-0-2 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 7-5-1 (2-3-1 Liberty League).
Escamilla (Bayport, NY/St. Anthony's) rose up for a corner kick from freshman Juan Widoycovich (Santiago, Chile/Berkshire School) in the 89th minute and managed to knock it just over the goal line for his first of the season.
RPI was not able to answer in the final minute, giving the Statesmen all three points from the conference tilt.
Hobart had the better of the early chances in the game, including a close range shot that was parried away by RPI sophomore goalkeeper
Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional).
Senior captain
Steven Collins (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) registered the hosts' lone shot on target in the opening stanza, but his long range attempt was swallowed up by Hobart junior keeper Alec Kaminer (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) in the 13th minute.
Junior Sam Farman (Irvington, NY/Irvington) got the Statesmen on the board right before halftime, but he was forced to reach for the ball and rolled just wide of the left post.
Tristan Cornell Roberts (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) put a half volley just over the crossbar in the 55th minute, before RPI freshman
Joe Di Miceli (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) had his attempt blocked following a an RPI free kick in the 58th.
Rensselaer won three consecutive corners after some solid buildup, but their best chance off of them - a well struck header from sophomore
Austin Betterly (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) was pushed high and wide by the left hand of Kaminer.
Minute before the winner, sophomore Ben Orr (Rochester, NY/Brighton) got in behind the RPI defense on a lofted through ball, but LaBranche came up big and made a sliding save.
RPI is back in action next Saturday, when it visits Ithaca College (12pm). Hobart hosts SUNY Cortland on Tuesday (4pm).
