TROY, N.Y. - Junior Elizabeth Coughlin made eight saves and three different players scored as the No. 16 Skidmore College field hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 3-1, in a Liberty League contest at Harkness Field. The Thoroughbreds improve to 11-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference. RPI, which held a 16-7 advantage in shots, falls to 2-11 and 1-4.

Skidmore got on the scoreboard just 3:35 into the contest when senior Kayla Rose (Falmouth, ME / North Yarmouth Academy) chipped in a shot from near the goal line. Rose injected the ball on a penalty corner and stepped into the play, collecting a return pass from Marissa Folts (Saratoga Springs, NY / Saratoga Springs) and scoring her third goal of the season. The visitors doubled their lead on a goal from Sarah Winters (Saratoga Springs, NY / Saratoga Springs) just under seven minutes later. The Thoroughbreds controlled the ball inside the circle with Folts and Seeley Fancher (Rowayton, CT / St. Luke's School) having possession before Fancher found Winters, who got a shot through traffic to notch her sixth of the season.

Despite being down at halftime, the Engineers generated first half offense, applying heavy pressure late in the frame. RPI, which had an apparent goal waived off with under a minute remaining, outshot the Thoroughbreds, 9-4, and earned more penalty corners, 7-4, in the first 35 minutes.

Rensselaer junior Mikaela DiBello (Mahopac, NY / Mahopac) cut the deficit to one at 41:57 when she took a pass from Jena Dolinar (Owings, MD / Northern) in the center of the circle, turned, shot and scored. The goall was DiBello's fifth and the assist was Dolinar's second.

Skidmore's Miranda Davenport (Kingston, NY / Rondout Valley) got the tally back just over six minutes later when she finished a feed from Toni Hamilton (Cottekill, NY / Rondout Valley). A freshman, Hamilton carried the ball to the right post, where she fed it back to Davenport, who finished the play for her sixth of the year.

Coughlin (Kennebunk, ME / North Yarmouth Academy) made four saves in both halves to improve to 5-1 on the season. Junior Rachel Kaufman (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) stopped two shots for RPI, which had more shots and penalty corners (11-7).

Rensselaer returns to the field on Friday against Union College in a league game. Skidmore travels to nationally-ranked University of Rochester for a first-place showdown on Friday. Both games begin at 4pm.
