TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Emily Dunn and sophomore
Emily Kaplan each recorded a goal an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College, on Wednesday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-5-2, while the Lyons drop to 2-11-2.
Kaplan (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) opened the scoring in the fifth minute, when she finished, first-time, from a cross by senior
Dali Alarian (Folsom, CA/Vista Del Lago) for her second goal of the year. Alarian tracked down a ball played up the right, before rolling a low service towards the near post for Kalplan.
Rensselaer doubled its lead in the 19th minute on junior
Vera Titze's (Erlanger, Germany/Gymnasium Fridericianum Erlangen) first collegiate goal. Taking a pass back from Kaplan, Titze laced a right-footed shot into the top right corner of the net from 25 yards out. The assist was Kaplan's team-leading third of the season.
Less than three minutes later, Dunn (Seattle, WA/Ballard) collected a loose ball inside the Mount Holyoke six-yard box and tapped home her third goal of the year.
The Engineers took their 3-0 lead to halftime, while outshooting the Lyons, 11-2.
An own goal gave the hosts a 4-0 advantage in the 58th minute, before senior
Jessica Dabney (Austin, TX/James Bowie) finished from close range to cap the scoring. Dunn delivered the cross on the play to pick up her first assist of 2017.
RPI senior
Hannah Bordogna (Andover, MA/Brooks School) made a bid for a sixth goal in the 84th minute, but her driven free kick from 32 yards was stopped and held nicely by Lyons freshman goalie Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, NY/Beacon School), who came on in place of junior Amanda Manaster (Beverly Hills, CA/Beverly Hills) at halftime.
Mount Holyoke turned in its best scoring chance in the 86th minute, when senior Sara Sanau Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain/P.P. Dominicos – Cardenal Xavierre) got free in the Rensselaer penalty area, but her attempt was pushed aside by Engineers senior goalkeeper
Tori Riopelle (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods), before the rebound was cleared.
The Engineers return to action on Saturday, when they resume Liberty League play against conference newcomer Ithaca College (1pm). Mount Holyoke visits Wheaton College on Saturday (1pm).
