TROY, N.Y. - Junior
Mikaela DiBello and senior
Kate Batzinger scored on penalty strokes and junior
Rachel Kaufman stopped four of the five attempts she faced as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team concluded the season with a dramatic, 1-0, win over SUNY Oneonta on Harkness Field.
Both teams were backstopped by outstanding goalie play as Kaufman finished with eight saves and Danell Jones had nine on the other end. Kaufman had three stops in the first half, four in the second and one in the second overtime. Jones, a sophomore, had three first half saves and two in the second, first overtime and second overtime.
Following 115:00 of action, the game went to penalty strokes with the visitors starting. Both teams were unsuccessful on their first shots, but RPI broke the ice when DiBello found the back of the cage. Oneonta's Allyson Bilow answered, but Batzinger followed with an RPI tally and Kaufman denied the Red Dragons' final shooter for the win.
The homestanding Engineers (5-12) held a 22-16 edge in shots, while Oneonta (13-5) had four more penalty corners, 15-11. Rensselaer had a 6-2 advantage after regulation, however.
