TROY, N.Y. – Senior Dali Alarian scored the eventual game-winning goal early in the first half to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Clarkson University, on Senior Day at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-7-2 (4-4-1 Liberty League), while the Golden Knights drop to 8-6-3 (4-4-1 Liberty League).
Alarian (Folsom, CA/Vista del Lago) opened the scoring in just the third minute, when she headed a cross from sophomore Jacqui Richard (Southwick, MA/Westminster School) off the left post and in for her third goal of the year.
RPI took its 1-0 lead to the halftime break, along with a 9-4 shot advantage.
Senior Stephanie May (Windham, NH/Central Catholic) had a pair of chances to double Engineers' lead in the second half, missing just wide and hitting the post in the 71st minute.
Rensselaer did eventually add an insurance goal in the 81st minute on freshman Olenka Soko's (Fort Worth, TX/Byron Nelson) second collegiate tally. Sophomore Alexis Castrellon (Conroe, TX/Battlefield) sent a cross in towards the near post for Soko, who steered it home from close range.
Sophomore goalie Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) stopped the only shot she saw on target to earn the win, while Clarkson's Elyse Green made four saves.
The Engineers will be the fifth seed in next week's Liberty League Tournament and travel to Canton, N.Y., to face St. Lawrence in the opening round on Tuesday (TBD). Clarkson is the sixth seed and will travel to RIT on Tuesday (TBD).
