Women's Soccer Streak Ends at Six

Box Score | RPI Athletics on Twitter

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Middlebury women's soccer team scored three times in the second half, as the Panthers defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (6-3-1) on Tuesday on Dragone Field. Middlebury (6-2-1) returns to play with a NESCAC contest at Tufts University on Saturday, while the Engineers, who saw their unbeaten streak (5-0-1) snapped at six games, travel to Liberty League foe Union College.

The Panthers had a flurry of scoring opportunities beginning at the 10:07 mark of the first half. Eliza Van Voorhis and Alissa Huntington shot one after another, but the RPI defense came up big with two blocks before Alex Barber riffled a shot just high of the net. Middlebury's best scoring opportunity of the first half came at the 28:31 mark when Van Voorhis rocketed a shot at Engineers goalkeeper Joey Lyons, who denied the attempt with a diving save to her left.

Out of the break, the Panthers wasted little time getting on the board when they found the back of the goal just 1:13 into the half. Emma Shumway sent a cross to Sabrina Glaser, whose header found Van Voorhis, before she tapped the ball into the back of the net. Middlebury made it a 2-0 game at the 68:32 mark, when Eliza Robinson finished a quick feed from Glaser, after Anna Glovin's initial free kick hit the cross bar.

RPI cut the deficit in half at 74:06 when Alexis Castrellon buried the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal on a penalty kick. However, the Panthers responded just 1:09 later when Glaser scored on her own rebound, after her initial shot from 10 yards out was denied by Lyons.

Middlebury held the advantage in shots (23-7), including a 12-3 edge in the opening half. Eva Shaw made one stop in the opening half, while Ursula Alwang recorded one save to earn the win for the Panthers. Lyons recorded 10 stops for the Engineers.
