Emily Dunn scored and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team held a significant advantage in shots, but was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at Union College on Saturday at College Park Field. With the tie, the Engineers are now 6-3-2 overall (3-0-1 Liberty League), while the Dutchwomen move to 5-3-2 (0-2-1 Liberty League).
Union scored on its first shot of the game as Julia Ferrelli netted her first goal of the season. The tally, which came in the seventh minute turned out to be the only shot attempt for the Dutchwomen in the opening 47 minutes of play.
Dunn equalized for the Engineers in the 32nd minute, following up a shot by senior
Stephanie May that was tipped off the crossbar by Union goalkeeper Allison Sorkenn. Dunn nodded home the rebound for her second goal of the year.
Play opened up in the second half, with RPI outshooting the Dutchwomen, 10-5, while earning three corners to Union's one.
RPI controlled the first overtime period, registering four shots and a corner, before the Dutchwomen had their chances to break the deadlock in the final 10 minutes.
The Engineers are back in action next Friday, when they travel to RIT (4pm). Union visits No. 6 William Smith on Friday (4pm).
