CANTON, N.Y. - Jethro Dede scored and Mike Smith made two saves to lead the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Wednesday afternoon at MacAllaster Field. With the win, the Saints improve to 5-4-2 (3-0-1 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 6-3-1 (1-1-1 Liberty League).
A balanced first half saw Rensselaer work its been scoring opportunity just six minutes in. Senior
Gabe El-Ghandour got behind the defense at the top of the 18, but Smith stuck out his left hand to turn the right-footed shot aside.Â

Matt LaBranche answered with an early top of his own on Dede in the 12th minute. Classmate
Dylan Confair then saw his shot from the left tipped over the bar by Smith.
The Saints broke onto the board in the 42nd minute, when Tapshak Augustine sent Dede with a through ball into the RPI penalty area. Dede tucked it away for his second goal of the year.
Rensselaer had a few set pieces in the second half, but unable to steer any of its chances on target. LaBranche came up big on a several occasions, including a breakaway save on Deke in the 86th minute.Â
St. Lawrence held a 16-6 advantage in shots, including 5-2 on goal. The Saints also attempted six corners to RPI's five.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they host Union for Senior Day (12pm). The Saints host RIT on Saturday (3pm).
