Men's Soccer Beats Union Late, 1-0

Trevor Bisson continues scoring run with 89th-minute winner

TROY, N.Y. – Freshman center back Trevor Bisson scored his team-leading third game-winning goal to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Union College, on Senior Day at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-3-1 (2-1-1 Liberty League), while the Dutchmen drop to 8-3-1 (0-3-1 Liberty League).

Rensselaer drew a free kick at the edge of the penalty area in the 89th minute and capitalized on the opportunity. Freshman Joe Di Miceli (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) took the spot kick that caught the right post and flashed across the face of the goal, Bisson was waiting at the edge of the six to head home his fourth goal of the year.

The Dutchmen turned in the first chance of the game, when junior Connor Horan (Norwell, MA/Norwell) saw his shot from the top of the 18 pushed aside by RPI sophomore goalkeeper Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional).

Union sophomore Salvador Lopez Jr. (Port Chester, NY/Brunswick School) found the mitts of LaBranche in the sixth minute after a corner kick from the right.
A 33rd minute header by Miceli was held by Union senior goalkeeper John Weitzman (Armonk, NY/Byram Hills), keeping the game scoreless into halftime.

The visitors' best chance to score came in the 54th minute, when substitute Vincent Oliveto (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) broke free for a 1-on-1 break with LaBranche. His right-footed shot skimmed just wide of the left post.

The Dutchmen had two more tries go by the wayside in the 84th minute, as Lopez Jr. hit the post before freshman Chris Muther (Concord, NH/Phillips Academy Andover) popped the rebound over the bar.

RPI sophomore Brandon Pirog (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) got on the end of a Tarek Khartabil (East Hampstead, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) corner, but his attempt went high.

LaBranche (6-3-1) finished with four saves, while Weitzman (8-3-1) had five at the other end of the field.

The Engineers are back in action on Friday, when they host RIT (4pm). Union hosts Hobart on Friday (4pm).
