Krumbhaar nets game-high 14 to lead Engineers past Salem State, 68-44

TROY, N.Y. - Junior Sam Krumbhaar scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team to a 68-44 victory over Salem State University, on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Vikings drop to 0-3.

Krumbhaar (Glen Burnie, MD/North Country) scored eight of her points in the second half on 3 of 4 shooting from the floor. Classmate LaKissa Martin (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) added eight in the second for a total of 12 on the day. She also hauled in 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Senior Saran Kaba (Dorchester, MA/O'Bryant) paced the Vikings with 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting. She recorded three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Kia Fernandes (Wareham, MA/Wareham) added nine points and nine boards.

After a slow start on both sides, which saw the Engineers take an 8-5 lead into the second quarter, RPI created some separation, outscoring Salem State, 20-11 in the second. Freshman Courtney Lewis (Port Jefferson, NY/Port Jefferson) had six first half points for Rensselaer.

The Engineers continued to extend their advantage throughout the third and fourth quarters. Sophomore Celia Tomlinson (Wakefield, RI/South Kingstown) netted six of her eight points in the second half, while also collecting seven total rebounds and a steal.

RPI is back in action on Tuesday, when it visits area-rival Sage Colleges (6pm). Salem State hosts Gordon on Tuesday (5:30pm).
