WORCESTER, Mass. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes won 14 of 16 events as the No. 23 Engineers defeated both Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), 204-96, and Simmons College, 225-75, in head-to-head dual meets. Rensselaer improves to 4-0 on the season, while WPI is now 4-1 and Simmons is 2-2.
RPI boasted seven individuals who had multiple victories, led by senior Jessica Sauve, who won three individual events and a relay. Junior Amanda Wang won two individual events and two relays and senior Shanny Lin was victorious three times, including in both butterfly events. Sophomore Jessica Kugelman won from both diving boards, including a second-cut qualifier for the NCAA Regional Meet.
The Engineers began the day with a dominating performance by Wang, Caitlyn Gardiner, Lin and Sauve in the 400 medley relay (4:04.27) as they won by more than nine seconds (4:13.45). Sauve then picked up her first individual victory in the 200 freestyle (1:56.54), narrowly defeating her twin, Danielle (1:56.91) by less than a second.
Rensselaer took the top three in the fourth event as Wang (1:00.93), Emily Mayoras (1:01.90) and Michaela Yamashita (1:02.67) touched the wall in order. Gardiner then won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.69) and Lin (2:08.99) followed with a nearly eight second win in the 200 butterfly. The runner-up finished in 2:16.31.Â
Freshman Kaitlin Joyce (25.12) won the 50 free, followed by Yamashita (25.55) and Danielle Sauve finished first in the 100 free (55.00) with Joyce in third (56.35). Wang (2:10.50) and Mayoras (2:10.71) were 1-2 in the 200 backstroke and Jessica Sauve (2:29.18), Erin Kane (2:34.77) and Gardiner (2:36.42) were 1-2-3 in the 200 breaststroke.
RPI also had the top three finishers in the 100 butterfly, led by Lin's 56.67 and followed by Yamashita (1:01.21) and Rebecca Baione (1:01.72) before Jessica Sauve (2:13.88), Mayoras (2:18.82) and Kane (2:19.34) swept the top three spots in the 200 individual medley.
The final event, the 400 free relay, also had Rensselaer finish first with Danielle Sauve, Yamashita, Wang and Joyce winning in a time of 3:41.64.
From the diving well, Kugelman (255.38) won from 1-meter by nearly 44 points (211.43) and from 3-meter by more than 66 points with a score of 268.87. Teammate Alex Gibbons was second with 202.50 points.
RPI returns to the pool with two meets next weekend, hosting Vassar College on Saturday (1pm) and traveling to Hartwick College on Sunday (1pm).
