AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Sophomore Mitch Shedlowsky threw a nine-inning complete game to lead the Albion College baseball team to a 5-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Friday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. With the win, the Britons improve to 5-2, while the Engineers drop to 0-6.
Shedlowsky (Waterford, MI/Mott) allowed one run on six hits, with three strikeouts and a walk. RPI junior starter
Aaron Kalish (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) went 6.0 innings, surrendering five runs (3 earned) on seven hits. He struck out six and walked one.
Rensselaer scored the game's first run in the top of the second, when junior catcher
Justin Valente (West Palm Beach, FL/Saint Andrews) lined a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home freshman
Noah Normyle (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union).
The Britons drew even at 1-1 in the third, when freshman Riley Stesiak (South Bend, IN/St. Joseph) stole third and came around to score on a throwing error.
Albion took the lead with a three-run bottom of the fifth. The inning was highlighted by bookend RBI-singles from junior Justin Dennis (Birmingham, MI/Groves) and sophomore Joey Mehelich (Jackson, MI/Lumen Christi).
Dennis then made it 5-1 in the sixth with a triple to right center, plating senior Shane Lindermann (Valencia, CA/Valencia) all the way from first.
Seniors
Adam Aponte (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) and
Jack Krasovec (Haverhill, MA/St. Johns Prep) each worked an inning in relief, combining to strike out five batters.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow morning, when they take on Grove City at Chain of Lake Park in Winter Haven, Fla. Albion concludes its spring trip tomorrow against Muskingum (10am).
