WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Junior captain Christian Spaguola delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Grove City College, on Saturday morning at Chain of Lakes Park. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-6, while the Wolverines drop to 3-7.
After Grove City broke through for the first run of the game in the top of the 11th, the Engineers answered with two in the bottom half for the win.
Freshman pinch hitter
Noah Normyle (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) reached on an error, before being replaced on the bases by classmate
Jimmy Jankowski (Bellport, NY/Bellport). Junior
Jeff Sitarski (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands) then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, in front of classmate
Justin Valente's (West Palm Beach, FL/Saint Andrews) game-tying single to center.
A wild pitch and a hit batsman put runners on the corners with one out for Spagnuola (Commack, NY/Commack), who lifted a deep fly ball past a drawn in outfield for the walk-off victory.
Grove City scored its run in the top of the 11th, when sophomore Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, CO/Fossil Ridge) dropped down a squeeze bunt, bringing home senior Nolan Myers (Landsiville, PA/Hempfield) from third.
RPI sophomore starter
Patrick McMackin (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington) allowed just three hits in 8.1 innings, striking out 10, with three walks. Senior captain
Adam Aponte (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) earned the win, tossing the final 2.1 innings. He surrendered a run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Wolverines' starter John Bini (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) went 10.1 innings, giving up one unearned run on 11 hits. He had four strikeouts and a walk.
The Engineers are back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon, when they take on Plattsburgh State (1:30pm). Grove City visits Penn State Beaver on Wednesday (3pm).
