Baseball Blanks Plattsburgh, 10-0

Seven-run first inning propels Engineers to second straight win

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Sophomore Brendan McNerney threw a complete game shutout in leading the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 10-0 victory over Plattsburgh State University, on Sunday at Chain O'Lakes Park. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-6, while the Cardinals drop to 2-1.

McNerney (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) allowed just two hits in 7.0 innings, striking out nine and walking two. He did not allow a hit after the third inning.

The Engineers plated seven runs in the first inning, chasing Plattsburgh starter Connor Lyons from the game with two outs in the inning.

Junior Wes Hawkins (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood) got the scoring started with a two-run single up the middle. Senior Jason Ramos (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) followed with a two-run double to straight away center for a 4-0 lead.

Three straight run-scoring hits to the left side of the diamond followed from seniors Jeff Sitarski (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands) and juniors Ethann Meister (Santa Teresa, NM/Santa Teresa) and J.T. Sawyer (Johnsonville, NY/Hoosic Valley).

Sitarski made it 8-0 in the second, when he singled home Meister. Senior Thomas Desmond (Alamo, CA/De LaSalle) followed with a single through the right side in the third, bringing home classmate Justin Valente (West Palm Beach, FL/Saint Andrews).

Valente then capped the scoring with an infield single that scored Sitarski from third.

The Engineers return to the diamond on Monday, when they take on Trinity (4pm). Plattsburgh faces MCLA (3pm).
