HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Steven Institute of Technology baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 6-5, in Game 1 of doubleheader on Sunday, before winning Game 2, 7-0. With the wins, the Ducks improve to 3-3-1 on the season, while the Engineers drop to 0-5.
A pair of RBI-singles in the bottom of the ninth turned a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 victory for Stevens in Game 1.
Yahriel Jimenez answered a Ducks run in the bottom of the second with an RBI-double in the top of the third.
Michael Arboleda followed that up with a grounder to second that went for an error and scored Jimenez for a 2-1 RPI lead.
Stevens quickly tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half with a run-scoring double.
A three-run top of the fourth gave the Engineers its largest lead of the day (5-2).
Thomas Desmond opened the rally with an RBI-single to center, before
Sean Welling brought home
Jason Ramos with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Jimenez plated the third run with a groundout to the pitcher.
The Ducks made it a one-run game once again with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame.
Four straight scoreless innings followed, before Stevens came through in the bottom of the ninth.
RPI starter
Aaron Kalish went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked one.
In Game 2, sophomore lefthander Danny Poidomani threw 7.0 shutout innings in topping the Engineers, 7-0. He allowed just three hits, striking out 14, while walking one.
Three Ducks had multiple hits, including senior Michael Mule, hit a home run.
RPI was led by Ramos and
Jack Vaccari, who each went 1 for 3.
Christopher Palmiero was solid in relief of
Brendan McNerney, going 3.1 innings and allowing just two hits, while striking out seven.
The Engineers are back in action on Friday, when they take on Albion College in Lake Myrtle, Fla. (2:30pm).
