TROY, N.Y. - Chelsea Orban and Kyle Graver both had three goals and an assist to lead the Montclair State University (MSU) women's lacrosse team to a 10-7 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a non-league contest at Renwyck Field. The Red Hawks improve to 4-1, while the Engineers are now 1-2.
Orban, a junior, set up the game's first goal three minutes into the first half and then scored six minutes later to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. RPI cut the deficit to one when senior
Sophie Hager tallied the first of her three goals of the contest at the 16:40 mark.
Montclair answered with the next two goals, starting with one unassisted from Graver, a freshman, and then a free position goal from Lindsay Lare. Hager pulled RPI back to within two, 4-2, but the Red Hawks scored two more before the half, including Orban from Garver with just 1:23 remaining and led 6-3 at the break.
Graver's second of the game and second of the season at 24:41 of the second half made it a four-goal game, but Engineers' sophomore
Abbey Salvon got the goal back only 41 seconds later with a shot from in front off a turnover. Hager's seventh goal of the season 10 minutes into the frame made it a two-goal game, but Lare and Graver scored back-to-back to regain the momentum and push the margin back to four.Â
Erin Goodwin scored for RPI with just under 10 minutes to play, but Orban's eighth of the year with 6:19 left made it 10-6.
Maddy Aslansan got her second of the season on a free position shot three minutes later, but RPI could get no closer.
Rensselaer won the battle of draws, 13-6, led by Salvon's five draw controls, but Montclair had more shots (22-17) and ground balls (27-23). Francesca Verrone led the Red Hawks with five ground balls, while Natalie Bade had four. Salvon had five ground balls for the Engineers.
Aleena Milinski made six saves for RPI, which returns to action on Monday against Roger Williams University in Florida (10am). Amanda Maguire stopped five shots for MSU, which is idle until March 18 when it plays at Muhlenberg College (1pm).Â
