TROY, N.Y. – Seniors
Stephanie Caudle and
Courtney McArthur led the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Skidmore College on Saturday at Doris Robison Field. With wins of 8-0 and 12-2, the Engineers improve to 16-6 overall (4-0 Liberty League), while the Thoroughbreds drop to 12-18 (2-4 Liberty League).
Caudle (Gainesville, FL/Gainesville) allowed a first inning triple to Skidmore senior Lauren Fortunato (Drexel Hill, PA/The Agnes Irwin School) before shutting down the Thoroughbreds over 5.0 innings in Game 1. She struck out seven and walked, throwing 76 pitches.
Offensively, she went 4 for 4 with a run and three runs batted in. Her run-scoring double in the third gave the hosts a 4-0 lead.
Rensselaer brought the game to a premature ending in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to two-run doubles from freshman
Maddie Provencher (Rutland, MA/Wachusett Regional) and Caudle.
Freshman
Cam Caswell (Prospect, CT/Woodland Regional) reached all four times, going 3 for 3 with a double and a walk, while senior Lilian Kolehmainen (Fresno, CA/Bullard) finished 2 for 3 with two doubles, a run and an RBI.
In Game 2, McArthur (Coventry, RI/St. Mary Academy) highlighted a seven-run bottom of the first with a three-run homer to left center. RPI combined to hit for the cycle as a team in the frame, as juniors
Rebecca Kienz (Newburgh, NY/Valley Central) tripled and
Victoria Greco (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) doubled in back-to-back at bats.
Skidmore came back with two in the top of the second on a sac fly and an RBI-single off the bat of junior Lizette Roman-Johnston (Wilton, CT/Wilton) to draw within 7-2.
RPI answered with a three-run bottom of the inning, which included run-scoring singles from Provencher and Kienz. The Engineers tacked on single runs in the third and fourth innings, with McArthur plating the game's final run on a homer to straight away center.
Junior
Sarah Harms (Wilsonville, OR/Wilsonville) picked up the win in the circle, allowing four hits over 3.0 innings of relief. She struck out two and walked two.
McArthur finished 2 for 2 with two homers, two runs and four RBI. Kienz was 2 for 3 with two RBI, while classmate
Devan Puhl (Frederick, MD/Linganore) went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday, when they host Oneonta for a twin bill (3pm). Skidmore travels to St. Lawrence for two next Saturday (1pm).
