Rochester Slips Past Women's Lax

Yellowjackets edge Engineers in defensive battle

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Jamie Wallisch and freshman Jamison Seabury each recorded three points to lead the University of Rochester women's lacrosse team to an 8-6 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Sunday afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to 5-2 (1-1 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 3-5 (1-1 Liberty League).

RPI sophomore Maddy Aslansan (Philadelphia, PA/Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) scored two of the game's first three goals to give the hosts an early 2-1 lead. Seabury (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) answered with two straight tallies – exactly five minutes apart – to put Rochester ahead, 3-2, at halftime.

The Engineers held a 12-9 shots edge at the break, despite the Yellowjackets winning four of the six draw controls in the opening stanza.

Senior captain Carly Kirchner (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and sophomore Abbey Salvon (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) scored in quick succession to open the second half for a 4-3 lead. Salvon's tally, which was her eighth of the season, came in a man-up situation.

Rochester drew even (4-4) with 18:25 to play on a goal by Wallisch (Amherst, NH/Souhegan), before classmate Danielle Diacovo (Kingston, NY/Kingston) put the Yellowjackets ahead for good 17 seconds later. Two more goals for the visitors made it 7-4 with 11:02 to go.

Rensselaer pulled one goal back at 24:50, when senior captain Sophie Hager (Northport, NY/Northport) potted her team-leading 18th goal of the year from the eight-meter arc. Junior captain Morgan Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) made it 7-6 with 2:11 to go, but Rochester won the ensuing draw control and was able to run some clock, before netting the game's final goal 1:04 remaining.

Aslansan finished with two goals to lead RPI, while Kirchner (1 goal, 1 assist) and Hager (1 goal, 1 assist) also had two points. Sophomore Aleena Milinski (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) recorded eight saves.

???????Wallisch (1 goal, 2 assists) and Seabury (3 goals) paced the Tigers, with sophomore goaltender Conley Ernst (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) had eight stops.

The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they travel to North Country-rivals St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively. Rochester hosts Vassar College and Bard College on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm).
