CANTON, N.Y. – Senior Kara Hurley scored 4:57 into overtime to lift the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Friday afternoon at North Country Field. With the win, the Saints improve to 4-5 (1-1 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 3-6 (1-2 Liberty League).
Hurley (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth South) took a feed from freshman Emma Jewett (Guilford, CT/Guilford) and buried the game-winner in the second half of the six-minute extra session.
A back-and-forth first half saw Rensselaer take an early 4-2 lead, 11:18 into the contest. Senior captain
Sophie Hager (Northport, NY/Northport) and junior captain
Morgan Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) netted goals a minute apart to break a 2-2 tie.
Freshman
Liz Brady (Bradford, MA/Haverill) gave RPI a 5-3 advantage with 8:44 left in the first half, before SLU answered with two goals, including one with 16 seconds left to knot the score at 5-5 after 30 minutes.
The Saints extended their scoring run to four straight early in the second half to take a 7-5 lead. Senior Keira Taussig (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) and junior Kayla Schmalz (Millbrook, NY/The Millbrook School) each netted unassisted tallies in the first four minutes of the stanza.
Rensselaer came right back with a four-goal spurt of its own to regain its two-goal lead (9-7) with 3:35 to play. Sophomore
Maddy Aslansan (Philadelphia, PA/Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) capped the run with her sixth goal of the season.
Taussig brought the hosts within 9-8 with 2:57 left, before junior Greta Massey (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) tied it up with 1:07 on the clock. Senior Julia Mitiguy (Cumberland, ME/Greely) picked up the assist on the equalizing goal.
RPI sophomore goaltender
Aleena Milinski (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) shattered her career-high for saves in a game with 18, while Saints sophomore Olga Lukas (Albany, NY/Albany Academy) and senior Cricket Wemyss (Dover, MA/Dover Sherborn) combined to make seven stops.
Eight different Rensselaer players scored goals, including two from Doyle. Brady and Hager each recorded a goal and an assist. Taussig paced the Saints with four goals, while Schmalz had two.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they visit Clarkson (3pm), while St. Lawrence hosts Skidmore tomorrow (3pm).
