Softball Splits With Plattsburgh

Engineers win Game 1, 7-6, before falling in nightcap, 6-5

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Stephanie Caudle threw a complete game and hit a home run to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a doubleheader split with Plattsburgh State on Wednesday afternoon at Doris Robison Field. The Engineers, who won 7-6, before falling 6-5, are now 10-4 on season, while the Cardinals move to 12-10.

In Game 1, Rensselaer took advantage of 12 walks and came from behind twice for the win.

After Plattsburgh plated a single run in the top of the second on a double by freshman Haleigh Agans (Brasher Falls, NY/St. Lawrence Central), the Engineers answered with a four-run bottom half, scoring twice without the benefit of a hit. Freshman Cam Caswell (Prospect, CT/Woodland Regional) capped the rally with a two-run double.

Agans tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the third, ripping another double to straight away center to score juniors Felicia Torres (Middletown, NY/Pine Bush) and Amanda Tantillo (Florida, NY/S.S. Seward).

Plattsburgh took the lead for the second time in the top of the fourth, when junior Dominique Zummo (Commack, NY/St. Anthony's) reached on an infield single, scoring a pair for a 6-4 lead.
RPI got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a home run by junior Chelsea Elliott (Latham, NY/Shaker).

In the bottom of the sixth, Caudle (Gainesville, FL/Gainesville) tied the score at 6-6 with a double to center, bringing home Caswell. Freshman third baseman Allie Hunt (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield) then drew a walk with the bases loaded to force home the go-ahead run.

Caudle struck out two in the seventh for her fourth complete game of the season. She allowed six runs on five hits in 7.0 innings, with six strikeouts and seven walks.

Plattsburgh jumped out to an early lead in Game 2, thanks to three home runs in the first three innings. Senior Hope VanBrocklin (Dexter, NY/General Brown) hit a solo shot in the in the top of the second to answer a long ball from Caudle in the bottom of the first.

Junior Kelsey Gage (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) hit the first two, two-run homers for the Cardinals in the third. Agans followed with the second for a 6-2 advantage.

RPI crept back into the game in the late innings, scoring once in the fifth on a squeeze bunt and again in the sixth on an error to pull within 6-4. Junior Christine White (Acushnet, MA/Tabor Academy) stole home in the seventh, but Plattsburgh junior Taylor Smith (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) was able to pick up the save, working the final 2.2 innings.
