Cup Champs Choose Will Reilly

Defenseman chosen by Pittsburgh in seventh round

CHICAGO, Ill. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) sophomore-to-be Will Reilly has been drafted by the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the seventh round, 217th overall, of the 2017 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Reilly, a defenseman, played 35 games for the Engineers last season, scoring twice with 13 assists for 15 points. The 6-3, 195 pound native of Toronto, Ont., had one power play goal. He also had 22 penalties for 68 minutes. 

Playing all 22 ECAC Hockey contests, Reilly had two goals and seven assists with 15 penalties for 46 minutes. 

The right-shot rearguard joined the Engineers from the Nainamo Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League. He had nine goals and 23 assists for 32 points in 52 games during the 2015-16 campaign.

Reilly is the 63rd player from RPI to be drafted all-time in the NHL, joining teammates Todd Burgess (Ottawa Senators), Chase Perry (Detroit Red Wings) and Mike Prapavessis (Dallas Stars). Burgess, a forward, was selected in the fourth round in 2016; Perry, a goalie, was chosen in the fifth round in 2014; and Prapavessis, a defenseman, was selected in the fourth round in 2014.
