Men's Soccer Tops New Paltz, 2-1

Freshman Trevor Bisson's 69th-minute tally is enough to take season opener

TROY, N.Y. - Freshman Trevor Bisson netted his first collegiate goal on his debut to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over SUNY New Paltz, on Friday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-0, while the Hawks drop to 0-1.

Bisson (Baton Rouge, LA/Episcopal) rose to meet a cross from junior Trevor McCaughey (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley) in the 69th minute, nodding home the eventual winner, from just inside the six. The goal, which was the first of Bisson's collegiate career, gave the Engineers a 2-0 lead.

Exactly six minutes later, the visitors drew to within 2-1, thanks to a right-footed volley from freshman Luis Tinoco (Williston Park, NY/Mineola), who found himself all alone inside the RPI penalty area. Sophomore Luke Dole (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) earned the assist on Tinoco's first goal as a Hawk.

New Paltz had an opportunity to tie the game in the 86th minute, but RPI sophomore goalkeeper Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) came off of his line to smother a shot from Hawks senior Aleco Podias (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun).

Senior captain Steven Collins (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) opened the scoring in the eighth minute, tucking away a low cross from sophomore Dillon Ashong (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) for his first of the year. Ashong flicked the ball to himself at the end line, before neatly slotting a ball back to Collins, who finished inside the right post.

LaBranche (1-0) finished with two saves, while New Paltz junior keeper John Guzzo (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place) did not make a stop at the other end of the field.

The Engineers are back in action tomorrow night, when they host Sage at East Campus Stadium (5pm). New Paltz visits Union tomorrow (5pm).
