TROY, N.Y. - Junior
Danny Corridan and sophomore
Dylan Confair led the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Sage College on Saturday night at East Campus Stadium. The Engineers, who struck for three goals in the second half, improve to 2-0, while the Gators drop to 0-2.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Corridan (Queens, NY/Archbishop Molloy) drew the hosts level in the 55th minute, taking a short feed from Confair (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport Area) and sticking home his first of two in the day.
Five minutes later Confair gave RPI the lead for good, when he finished first-time off of a free kick service from junior
Trevor McCaughey (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley) for his first collegiate goal. The assist was McCaughey's second in as many nights.
Corridan then gave the Engineers some breathing room in the 64th minute, combining with Confair once again. This time from the top of the 18, he right-footed a shot past Sage sophomore goalkeeper Michael Chiaravalloti (Torrington, CT/Oliver Wolcott) for a 3-1 lead. Corridan entered play with just one goal in 27 collegiate games, before notching the double against the Raptors.
Sophomore goalie
Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) was forced to make seven saves, including a pair in the opening four minutes.
Sage broke through in the fifth minute on junior River Seybolt's (Selden, NY/Longwood) second goal in two games. Chiaravalloti had three saves.
RPI out-shot the Raptors 18-15, while drawing nine corners to Sage's four. Three yellow cards were issued, including two to goal scorers Confair and Seybolt. Senior captain
Dan Graybill (Reinholds, PA/Cocalico) picked up a late one for a hard challenge.
The Engineers are back in action on Friday, when they take on Rhode Island College at the Mayor's Cup in Oneonta, N.Y. (1pm). The Gators are home to Potsdam on Friday (4pm).
