Montclair, N.J. - Junior midfielder Amber Haslett posted her second multiple-goal game of the season, scoring twice, as No. 8 Montclair State University posted a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.
Senior forward Kaitlyn Struss added a goal for the Red Hawks, who remained unbeaten at 7-0. It is the best start for MSU since 2013 and the third time in the last seven years that Montclair has opened the year with seven consecutive wins.
Junior goalkeeper
Rachel Kaufman stopped 16 shots for the Engineers, who fell to 1-5 on the season.
Despite a wide shooting advantage for Montclair (27-1), the contest remained scoreless until 12:34 to play in the first half. Struss gathered a loose ball in the circle and moved across to her left before reverse chipping a shot past Kaufman.
Haslett added to the lead five minutes later with the first of her two scores. Taking the restart off a foul, Haslett moved toward the left side before pivoting back and firing a shot inside the right post giving MSU a 2-0 lead.
Haslett would get the final goal with just under eight minutes to play. Junior Kailey Dalgauer made a long pass to Haslett at the top of the circle. She took two strides to her right before getting off a shot that found the back of the cage.
Kaitlin Maguire (one save) and Nicole Andriani combined on the shutout, MSU's second of the year. In addition to the large margin in shots, MSU, which improved to 10-2 all-time against RPI, held a 15-1 advantage in penalty corners.
