Men's Soccer Edges Bard in OT

Pirog's first two goals of the year lead Engineers to league win

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Sophomore Brandon Pirog netted the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Bard College, in the Liberty League opener for both teams, on Saturday at Ferrari Field. with the win, the Engineers improve to 5-2 (1-0 Liberty League), while the Raptors drop to 3-4 (0-1 Liberty League).

Pirog scored the winner in the 92nd minute, heading home a cross from the left by classmate Dylan Confair. The tally, which was Pirog's second goal of the game, sent Rensselaer home with three points out of three to start the league campaign.

Bard tied the game in dramatic fashion just minutes earlier, as a free kick by Nick Schenberger deflected off the RPI wall and over sophomore goalie Matt LaBranche, knotting the score at 2-2. Schenberger's second of the game came in the 89th minute of play.

RPI opened the scoring in the 12th minute, as sophomore Austin Betterly latched onto a long ball from junior Danny Corridan and smashed in his team-leading fourth goal of the year.

Bard drew even seven minutes later, as Schenberger corralled the rebound of a penalty kick save and finished into an open net. Jake Cicero's attempt from the spot was pushed away by LaBranche, but the rebound fell to Schenberger for the game-tying tally.

The Engineers regained the lead in the 62nd minute, Confair found Pirog with a hard low cross in the middle of the penalty area. Pirog burried the chance for his first of the year.

Rensselaer finished with a 20-7 shot advantage, including 10-4 on goal. LaBranche had two saves on the day, while Bard's Taylor Bond notched seven.

The Engineers return to action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Keene State in a non-league contest at ECAV Stadium (3:30pm). Bard visits Vassar on Wednesday (4pm).
