TROY, N.Y. - Senior
Stephanie May scored the game-winning goal and assisted on another to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence University, on Sunday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-2-1 overall (2-0 Liberty League) while the Saints drop to 6-3-0 (1-1 Liberty League).
With the score level at 1-1 in the 80th minute, May (Windham, NH/Central Catholic) took a cross from the left flank by sophomore
Emily Kaplan (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) and finished, first time, into the left side-netting. The tally was her team-leading second of the year.
RPI opened the scoring in the seventh minute, when May found junior
Emily Dunn (Seattle, WA/Ballard) with a looping cross into the edge of the six-yard area. Dunn beat her mark to the ball and poked it home off the inside the left post.
The Engineers lead 1-0 at halftime, with a narrow 3-2 edge in shots.
St. Lawrence drew even in the 74th minute on freshman Julia Mulhern's (Beaconsfield, PQ/Hotchkiss) second of the season. Her free kick from 25 yards out clipped the underside of the crossbar, before making its way into the net. Junior Julia Hill (Stowe, MA/Nashoba Regional) earned the assist.
Rensselaer sophomore goalkeeper
Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) and her counterpart, SLU sophomore Samantha Allen (Ringwood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) each finished with three saves.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they host Skidmore at East Campus Stadium (3pm). The Saints host Ithaca on Saturday (2pm).
