TROY, N.Y. - Seniors
Dali Alarian and
Bethany Hanson scored second half goals and sophomore
Joey Lyons made eight saves as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team defeated Skidmore College, 2-0, in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference. The Thoroughbreds are now 2-6-1 and 0-2-1.
Rensselaer extended its unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1) behind its seniors. Alarian got the Engineers on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute when she carried the ball from right to left and put a left-footed shot into the top left corner of the goal. It was her first marker of the season.
RPI continued to pressure the Thoroughbreds and took advantage of a corner kick in the 86th minute. Sophomore
Jacqui Richard served the ball from the left corner to the front of the net, where Hanson headed it off the crossbar and into the goal. For Hanson, the goal was her second of the season.
Neither team scored in the first half, though both had opportunities. Alarian had a shot from the right side saved and
Emily Dunn's rebound chance went high, while Skidmore's Christina Sanzari sent a drive toward Lyons, who covered it.
The chances continued in the second half with the game still scoreless, including a shot by the Thoroughbreds' Courtney Shaw that hit the outside of the post and kicked out of bounds. RPI's
Emily Kaplan countered with an attempt, but her shot went wide.
Alexis Castrellon had a chance to put the Engineers by two goals, but her shot off a pass from Kaplan when wide right.
Rensselaer held an 18-13 edge in shots, including 10-5 on goal, and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Lyons had four saves in each half, while Alyssa Rollins stopped five shots with three coming in the first half.
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday afternoon at Middlebury College (4pm), while Skidmore hosts league foe Vassar College on Saturday (3pm).
