SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Union College went on a 6-0 run to break a tie with under three minutes remaining and the Dutchmen went on to defeat the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team, 64-59, in a Liberty League game. The Engineers fall to 8-8 overall and 3-6 in the conference, while Union is now 9-6 and 5-4.
With the score tied 56-56 with 2:53 to play, the Dutchmen made four free throws and a basket to go ahead 62-56 with 32 seconds remaining. They also forced a pair of turnovers in that span. Rensselaer junior
Tom Horvat cut the deficit in half with a three-pointer with 18 seconds left, but Kevin Weckworth answered with two free throws for the five-point margin. Weckworth scored the final seven points of the contest for the Dutchmen.
RPI, which held a 30-28 lead at halftime, saw Horvat score 20 points with seven rebounds, three assists and four steals to lead the team.
Marcus Giese scored 11 with five rebounds and
Mitchel Wayand notched 10 points in 29 minutes off the bench.
Greg King had 19 points in the victory, including 11 in the second half, while Weckworth finished with 14 points with seven in both halves.Â
The Engineers return to the court on Friday night at 8pm against RIT at East Campus Arena in Troy.
