Selander Breaks Career Saves Record in 3-3 Tie to Dartmouth

TROY, N.Y. - Junior Lovisa Selander broke Sonjia van der Bliek's '11 six year old career saves record in a 26 save effort Saturday afternoon in 3-3 ECAC Hockey conference matchup with Dartmouth.

The Engineers were led on offense by senior Whitney Renn with one goal and an assist while Dartmouth's (4-10-2, 2-7-2 ECACH) Alyssa Baker (Ottowa, Ontario) had a goal and assist of her own for the Big Green.

RPI (7-10-4, 4-4-2) opened up action outshooting Dartmouth 5-1 before the Big Green drew a penalty for tripping 4:52 into the game. 40 seconds into the power play, sophomore Sabrina Repaci ripped a shot to the top left corner, but Dartmouth's Christie Honor (Mississauga, Ontario), came up with her third save of the game.

With less than eight minutes less in the period, Jaimie Grigsby took the puck behind the net and reached around the pipe to try to slide a shot into the net, but Honor's pads denied the junior. Two and a half minutes later, Grigsby took a shot on a pass across the ice from Blake Orosz with a 3v2 advantage, but Honor continued to come up big for the Big Green.

Rensselaer kept their intense offense up as Grigsby, Orosz, Renn and senior Amanda Kimmerle combined for five shots in a 25 second span, but no one found the back of the net.

After a scoreless first period, Dartmouth opened up the scoring 7:57 into the second period on a power play goal from Baker who deflected the puck on the right pipe off a shot from senior Hailey Noronha (Newmarket, Ontario). Less than seven minutes later, sophomore Christistine Rombaut and Baker won the puck in the RPI corner to find freshman Megan Cornell directly in front of the net for the 2-0 lead.

RPI broke through the Big Green defense less than 30 seconds later when Madeleine Burnett collected the puck in the right corner of the Dartmouth zone. The freshman found Marisa Raspa who played the puck to junior Aly Tremblay crashing the net from 15 feet out to bring the Engineers back within one going into the second intermission.

A minute and a half into the third period, Selander came up with a pair of saves on back-to-back shot from sophomore Bailee Brekke to break van der Bliek's 2,662 career saves record on her sixteenth and seventeenth saves of the game. Kimmerle collected the puck at center ice a little over two minutes later. The senior passed the puck to Renn in the Engineers zone who brought the puck up the left side of the ice straight to goal to tie the game 2-2.

RPI took its first lead of the game four and half minutes later when Josefine Hansen scored just over the blue line on assists from Renn and senior Shayna Tomlinson.

With a little more than three minutes left in regulation, the Big Green's freshman Linda Essery tied the game 3-3 with assists from freshmen Jennifer Costa and Taylor Matherson.

Tomlinson received the puck just over the blue line into Big Green territory with only two minutes left in regulation. The captain played it to Makenna Thomas in front of the net. The junior had a quick 1v1 with Honor, but the Dartmouth netminder denied Thomas to force overtime.

The Big Green out shot Rensselaer 6-3 in overtime with sophomore Megan Hayes taking a last second shot from the blue line that fell just short of giving the Engineers their eighth win of the season.

Tomlinson was a force to be reckoned with in the faceoff circle having won 22 out of 27 attempts.

Honor (3-10-1) and Selander (7-10-4) each picked up a tie with 42 and 26 saves, respectively.

After going 0-1-1 this weekend in conference play, RPI (10 points) sits in eighth in the ECACH. #3 Clarkson and Quinnipiac top the table with 16 points apiece followed by #4 Colgate (14 points). Harvard and #10 St. Lawrence are tied for fourth with 13 points each with #5 Cornell (12 points) and Princeton (11 points) rounding out the top eight.

Rensselaer takes to the road next weekend to continue conference play at #3 Clarkson and #10 St. Lawrence on Jan. 12 (6pm) and 13, respectively.
