Women's Soccer Draws With RIT

Box Score | Game Highlights

TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Alyssa Salls stopped nine shots in 65 minutes of action, including a point-blank attempt in extra time, to help the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) women's soccer team to a scoreless draw with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Stadium. Both teams are now 1-2-2 in the conference with RPI moving to 4-6-2 overall. The Tigers are 6-3-2.

Rensselaer senior Joey Lyons backstopped the blank sheet with four saves in 110:00, while Salls entered after halftime to earn a combined shutout with Ingrida Ivaska, who had three first half saves. Salls made three saves in the first overtime and one in the second.

The Engineers had several strong scoring opportunities but none better than in the 97th minute when freshman Whitney Wisnom fought off a defender and flicked a shot from nine yards out that Salls reached up and knocked aside. The Tigers cleared the ball and the game remained scoreless.

Both teams had chances in the first half, including an Olenka Soko shot from 15 yards out in the 11th minute that Ivaska reached on a dive and a Wisnom chip shot that nearly carried Ivaska into the goal. RIT's best first half chance to take the lead came off the foot of Marla Roberts, whose sweeping shot was saved by Lyons with just under 19 minutes to play in the first half.

RPI had a 6-4 advantage in shots in the first frame and finished the contest with an 18-14 edge. Both teams had two corner kicks.

Wisnom finished with five shots, including three on goal, while Jacqui Richard and Emily Kaplan both had four with two on goal. Emily Thiel had three shots (1 on goal) for the Tigers.

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host No. 7 William Smith College in a conference contest (2pm). RIT travels to Skidmore College for a Liberty League game (2pm).
