Trevor Bisson and freshman
Billy Chissoe netted second half goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Hobart College on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 6-5-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in Liberty League play while the Engineers improve to 5-8-1 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.
Hobart had the game's first shot and scoring opportunity in the 16th minute when sophomore
Kyle Mangold had a shot blocked. Less than a minute later, sophomore
August Martini had scoring opportunity off a free kick from 19-yards out. His shot beat the RPI wall but glanced off the left post.
The Engineers jumped in front in the 48th minute, taking advantage of a free kick from 25-yards out. Following a Hobart foul,
Michael Harten put the ball into the box. Bisson, who was on the receiving end, headed the ball past
Alec Kaminer inside the right post.
Chissoe doubled the Engineers lead in the 79th minute. He collected the ball at the top of the box on the left wing, dribbled around a defender, and shot sent a shot into the right corner of the goal for his fifth of the season. Thirty seconds later, Chissoe nearly scored again but his shot was kicked over the end line by
Binjo Emmanuel.
Senior
Alex Weisbein had Hobart's best scoring opportunity of the game. In the 81st minute, he stole the ball from and RPI defender and fired a shot off the cross bar from 15-yards.
Kaminer played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves. At the opposite end of the field,
Luke Brezak made six saves for the Engineers.
The Statesmen finished the game with a 16-9 edge in shots, including an 11-4 edge in the second half. RPI earned a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 20, when it travels to Vassar (2pm). Rensselaer hosts Hartwick in a non-league game on Tuesday (7:30pm).
