Field Hockey Wins 1-0 in Overtime

Box Score | Highlights

TROY, N.Y. - Junior Charisse Stakutis scored on a rebound of her own shot in overtime and senior Rachel Kaufman stopped all seven shots she faced to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Ithaca College in a Liberty League contest at Harkness Field. The Engineers, who played their third overtime in the past four games, improve to 3-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The Bombers fall to 9-5 and 2-3.

Stakutis notched the game-winner at 5:31 of the extra frame with her second goal of the season. Stationed in front of the goalkeeper, she received a pass from Casey Collette, turned and shot the ball. Savanna Lenker came out and made the save, but the ball caromed back to Stakutis, who jabbed it past the Bombers goalie before she could get reset.

Rensselaer generated an opportunity just moments before the tally, but Mikaela DiBello's shot off a penalty corner was deflected wide. Ithaca had a corner of its own in overtime, which was granted when Kaufman came out aggressively to knock the ball off the stick of Ithaca's Meg Dowd. The resulting attempt led to a Kimmy Briscoe shot, but that was blocked.

Following an evenly played first half in which both teams had eight shots, the Bombers controlled possession for much of the second half, earning 13 shots and 11 penalty corners. However, Kaufman smothered several loose ball opportunities while also making three saves in the frame. Lenker stopped one second half shot and five overall, including the one in overtime.

Ithaca, which had a 22-13 edge in shots and an 18-7 advantage in penalty corners at game's end, got six shots (2 on goal) from Maria McGloin and four from Briscoe. The Bombers return to the field on Friday at 3pm when they travel to St. Lawrence University for a league contest.

The Engineers, who are 3-3 in their last six contests, are back at home that day when they welcome conference foe Willilam Smith College at 4pm.
