POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior captain
Danny Corridan scored the eventual game-winning goal in the second half, to pace the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Vassar College on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-8-1 overall (5-3-0 Liberty League), while the Brewers drop to 9-5-0 (5-3-0 Liberty League).
Corridan broke a scoreless tie in the 75th minute, powering home a rebound at the left side of the goal, after a shot by junior
Dylan Confair was stopped by Vassar goalkeeper Will Marment at close range.
Five minutes later, Henrik Olsson was taken down in the box, drawing a Vassar penalty kick. RPI freshman keeper
Luke Brezak guessed right on the attempt from the spot by Kevin Baliat, parrying the shot away, before senior
Dan Graybill was able to clear it out of danger.
Rensselaer doubled its lead in the 85th minute, when freshman
Billy Chissoe slipped a pass in behind the Brewers defense for sophomore
Tommaso Valagussa, who beat Marment for his third goal of the year.
The Engineers had a chance to break the deadlock earlier in the second half, but a 66th minute effort from junior
Matt Menendez found the woodwork. Three minutes later, Chissoe found some space at the top of the 18 to rip a shot that sailed just over the crossbar.
RPI, which was outshot 9-4 by the hosts in the first half, turned the tide early in the second, en route to a 13-3 advantage in attempts in the second 45 minutes. Brezak (3-1-0) finished with two saves, including the crucial penalty stop. Marment (7-4-0) had seven stops for the hosts.
The Engineers, who extended their shutout streak to 378:23 minutes, close out the regular season at home against Clarkson on Saturday at East Campus Stadium (2pm). Vassar visits Ithaca College on Saturday (2pm). RPI can finish as high as second in the Liberty League with a win against the Golden Knights and either a Hobart loss or draw at St. Lawrence.
