W. Soccer Drops Final Home Match

Vassar's fifth minute marker holds up in 1-0 Liberty League win

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Rebecca Andrews scored the only goal of the game to lead the Vassar College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Wednesday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Brewers improve to 9-5-1 overall (5-3-0 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 4-9-3 (1-5-2 Liberty League).

Andrews (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos) picked up a half clearance near midfield and cut up field, before lifting a shot over the outstretched arms of RPI junior goalkeeper Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) for her fourth goal of the season. The tally, which came in the fifth minute, was the first shot of the game for either team.

RPI nearly equalized three minutes later, when senior Emily Dunn (Seattle, WA/Ballard) got in behind the Vassar defense, but sophomore goalkeeper Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ/Blair Academy) was able to recover in time to scoop up Dunn's attempt, which wound up rolling towards goal.

In the 16th minute, Vassar sophomore Ashley Ferry (Westfield, NJ/Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child) set up junior Savannah Cutler (Deer Park, TX/Deer Park) with an angled ball towards the left side of the RPI area, but Lyons was able to cut down the angle and push Cutler's attempt out for a corner.

The Engineers had two late first half chances, beginning with a great individual effort from sophomore Olenka Soko (Fort Worth, TX/Byron Nelson), who push the ball up the left side, before ripping a left-footed shot that was stopped, but not held, by Walsh. The ensuing clearing attempt from the Brewers defense was stopped at the top of the 18 by RPI freshman Erin Barnes (Hooksett, NH/Londonderry), but her well-struck try was blocked.

Rensselaer generated even more chances in the second half, including a tantalizing cross from the left side of the penalty area by junior Emily Kaplan (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) that skipped across the goal mouth, untouched in the 50th minute. Moments later, freshman Whitney Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA/Design Tech.) turned her defended and drove at goal, only to see her right-footed try spin wide to the left.

Dunn was denied on a point blank effort in the 55th minute after ball was played over the top and in the direction of the left post. Left with little room, all she could do was steer a volley into the arms of Walsh. Three minutes later, Wisnom left a ball off for classmate Ali Bisaccia (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union), but her shot from distance clipped the top of the crossbar on its way out of play.

Vassar junior Jordan Moss (Tustin, CA/Foothill) found the RPI crossbar with a shot in the 61st minute.

Kaplan then turned RPI's best chance to tie the game in the 70th minute. Wisnom sent a cross in from the right flank that deflected to Kaplan at the top of the 18. Her first-time strike nearly caught Walsh leaning the wrong way, but the Brewers keeper was able to get her fingertips to it just in time.

Rensselaer finished with a 13-10 shot advantage in the game, including 8-3 on goal. Lyons (4-9-2) made two saves over the opening 79 minutes, before giving way to freshman Alex Benfatti (Johnstown, NY/Gloversville). Walsh (8-5-1) had eight stops at the other end of the field.

The Engineer close out their regular season on Saturday, when they visit Clarkson (3pm). Vassar hosts Ithaca on Saturday (2pm).
