TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Sabrina Repaci scored the equalizing goal late in the second period to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team a 1-1 tie with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), on Friday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the draw, the Engineers are now 1-3-2 on the year, while the Tigers move to 1-3-3.
Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) redirected a feed from senior
Jaimie Grigsby (Whitby, ON/Whitby Wolves) inside the right post to the tie the game at 17:05 of the second period. The tally, which was Repaci's first of the year, drew a secondary assist from sophomore blueliner
Madeleine Burnett (London, ON/Bluewater Hawks).
RPI nearly tied the score two minutes earlier, when junior
Blake Orosz (Chase Mills, NY/Nepean Wildcats) found the cross bar on a 2-on-2 rush into the zone.
Halfway through the scoreless third period, sophomore
Morgan Ondrick (Shorewood, IL/Chicago Young Americans) saw her backhand attempt stopped by RIT junior netminder Terra Lanteigne (Hachet Lake, NS/Metro Boston Pizza) with the blocker.
The Tigers got the scoring started at 10:11 of the first period, when senior Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, ON/Hamilton Hawks) stuffed home a rebound inside the crease. Classmate Mallory Rushton (Amherst, NS/New Hampton Prep) started the play, when she drove the net from the left wing and fired a shot that RPI senior captain
Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) got most of, but could not corral.
RPI finished with a 37-34 advantage in shots and went 0 for 3 on the power play. The Engineers did take a penalty in the contest.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon for game two of the weekend series, with puck drop scheduled for 3pm.
