TROY, N.Y. - Senior Kelsey Hartsoe made eight saves and the Union College women's soccer team overcame an early deficit to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 2-1, in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Stadium. The Dutchwomen improve to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Engineers fall to 4-6-1 and 1-2-1.
With the game tied at 1-1 to start the second half, Hartsoe kept the score that way by making two saves in the first nine minutes of the frame. She stopped a
Whitney Wisnom attempt in the 55th minute and then smothered an
Emily Kaplan shot on a 1v1 chance under a minute later. Union also got a block on the goal line of a Rensselaer shot. The Engineers had three corner kicks to that point in the half.
Following Hartsoe's save on Kaplan, the Dutchwomen countered with a shot from 28 yards out by Erin O'Shea that eluded goalkeeper
Joey Lyons and rolled across the goal line. It was O'Shea's fourth tally of the season.
The play was even for most of the second half until Rensselaer had a pair of high-end opportunities with under a minute to play. However, a
Jacqui Richard shot was blocked and Hartsoe made a save on a bid from
Jeanine Moreau.
Rensselaer broke out in front in the fourth minute when sophomore
Michelle Lomoz drove to the net on a Richard corner kick, leaped and headed the ball over the outstretched hands of Hartsoe and into the top right corner of the net. Union answered seven minutes later when Linsey Giles scored on a header from three yards out off a Emma Schleimer corner kick.
Hartsoe had four saves in both halves, while
Joey Lyons finished with four saves on the other end. RPI held a 16-12 lead in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Engineers are back in action on Friday when they host RIT in a conference contest (4pm). The Dutchwomen host No. 7 William Smith College on Friday at 4pm.
