Women's Basketball Beats Rams

TROY, N.Y. - Four student-athletes scored in double figures and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team held Farmingdale State College to just 26.9% shooting on its way to a 67-45 win at East Campus Arena. 

RPI improved to 3-0 behind senior LaKissa Martin's 18 points and eight rebounds and junior Ines Ortea's 16 points and seven caroms and four steals. Elizabeth Eckhardt added 16 points and sophomore Courtney Lewis scored 10 points. The Rams, who were playing their first game of the season, were led by junior guard Nia Miller, who tied for game-high honors with 18 points. Angeline Klein, a sophomore guard, added 14 points. Alexis Hunter led all players with 16 boards and teammate Cristina Rayfield pulled down 10.

The Engineers scored nine of the first 11 points on a pair of three pointers from Lewis and a triple from Eckhardt. Layups from Ortea and Martin made it a 13-2 game before Klein hit a a pair of threes for Farmingdale to pull the visitors to within five points, 13-8, with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter. Martin answered with and-1 three point play, sophomore Sierra Carr scored from the right wing and Martin nailed a jumper from the top of the arc to push the lead to 22-8 just a minute later. The frame ended with RPI holding a 12-point advantage (24-12) as the Engineers shot 52.9% (9 of 17) and the Rams at 33.3% (3 of 9). 

Rensselaer went on to make 8 of 16 second quarter attempts, while Farmingdale was 3 of 16 (18.8%) for a 43-20 lead at the break. The Rams cut the deficit by two points after the third quarter (58-32) but they could not duplicate the result in the fourth.

Farmingdale, which made 14 of 52 field goal attempts, is right back in action on Saturday when it plays at No. 1 Amherst College at 6pm. The Mammoths then host Rensselaer on Sunday at 3pm.
