AMHERST, Mass. - Hannah Fox scored 23 points and had three assists and three steals as the No. 1 Amherst College women's basketball team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 72-39, on Sunday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Freshman Dani Valdez narrowly missed her first collegiate double-double with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds, her second straight day leading the team on the glass. She also dished out two assists, recorded two thefts, and led all players with three blocks. Madeline Eck scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and led the Mammoths with five assists and four steals.
Amherst (2-0), the two-time defending NCAA Champion, shot 17-33 (51.5%) from the floor in the first half, scoring 21 points in each of the first two quarters. It led 21-9 after one quarter and 42-20 at the break. The Mammoths held the Engineers to just 12 made field goals, no more than four in any one quarter, and a shooting percentage of 23.1%.
LaKissa Martin and
Sam O'Keefe scored nine points apiece for the Engineers (3-1), who also had a 13-12 advantage in steals as the RPI defense forced Amherst into 19 turnovers. Martin had three thefts, as did
Elizabeth Eckhardt and
Ines Ortea, who scored six points and had a block, two assists and five rebounds.
Fox was 3 for 5 from behind the three-point line, where the Mammoths shot 7 for 19. Cam Hendricks made a pair of threes and scored eight points while handing out three dimes.
The interior game was also productive for Amherst, who outscored RPI 30-10 in the paint.
Rensselaer returns to the court on Tuesday night at 6pm when it hosts The Sage Colleges at East Campus Arena. Amherst hosts Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday at 7:30pm.
