TROY, N.Y. - The second-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team travels to Canton, N.Y. for the Liberty League Semifinals, where they will take on third-seeded Ithaca College, Saturday at 1:30pm. Tournament host and top-seeded St. Lawrence University will take on fourth-seeded Hobart College at 11am, with the winners of the two games squaring off on Sunday in the title game (1:30pm).
RPI, which has won its last five games entering the postseason, is 9-8-1 overall. The Engineers went 6-3-0 in Liberty League play to earn the second seed in the conference tournament and a bye through the quarterfinal round. Five of the team's six clean sheets have come over the last five matches, in which RPI has outscored the opposition 13-0. The Engineers have scored 33 goals, compared to 19 against and have drawn 103 corners to 52 allowed.
Individually, Rensselaer is paced by freshman midfielder
Billy Chissoe (Gig Harbor, WA/Charles Wright Academy), who has five goals and one assist for 11 points. Junior
Austin Betterly (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) is second with four goals and two assists for 10 points, while sophomores
Michael Harten (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) (2 goals, 4 assists) and
Trevor Bisson (Baton Rouge, LA/Episcopal) (4 goals) have eight points apiece.
Junior captain
Matt LaBranche (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) is 5-4-1 with a 1.29 goals against average and a .659 save percentage in 12 starts. Freshman
Luke Brezak (Camano Island, WA/The Overlake School), who has started the last five matches, is 4-1-0 with a 0.61 goals against average and an .846 save percentage.
RPI missed the playoffs in 2017, but made the conference tournament in the seven of the previous nine seasons. Since 2008, the Engineers have reached the league's title game three times (2010, 2012 & 2014), winning at Vassar in 2012 on penalty kicks.
