BOSTON, Mass. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's track & field season got underway on Saturday and two student-athletes set school records, including one who very likely posted an NCAA qualifier score, as the Engineers competed in the non team scoring UMass Boston Indoor Opener at the Reggie Lewis Center.
FreshmanÂ
Jacy Scharlow made her first collegiate meet an impressive one as she won the high jump with a school record height of 1.70 meters. She defeated 30 others with an effort that was good enough to meet the 2018 NCAA Championship qualifying standard. Rensselaer had three others in the top seven of the high jump with
Lauren Parker finishing third,
Jillian Salkind coming in fourth and
Maya Verma placing seventh.
RPI's other record setting performance came from
Sarah Dalakos in the women's 60 meter dash, which the junior ran in 8.143 in the preliminaries and then 8.186 in the final to finish fifth.
Also on the track, freshman
Madison Perez was the runner-up in the 800, while also helping the 4x400Â team to a third place finish. She was the anchor on a squad that also included classmate
Jordan Porter, sophomore
Alyssa Richtarek and senior
Katie Clark. Richtarek and Porter also ran in the 500, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively.Â
Rensselaer had two of the top eight finishers in the 60 Hurdles with
Dainara Veeder coming in fifth and
Ileana Sirois placing eighth. Sirois went on to finish fifth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump.
The women's team's lone first place finisher was
Maurin O'Connor, who captured the pole vault with a height of 2.90 meters. Teammate Samantha Shirk was fourth at 2.75 meters. RPI also had two of the top finishers in the weight throw as senior
Marissa Folk was third and freshman
Morgan Daley was sixth.
