TROY, N.Y. - The final Learfield Directors' Cup fall standings for Division III have been announced and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is 18th in the nation and first among Liberty League schools.
The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships. The Engineers concluded the fall with 191.50 points, which was only 10 behind 17th place Amherst College. Johns Hopkins University leads with 475.00 points, followed by Tufts University (353.50), Middlebury College (345.50), Washington University in St. Louis (323.00) and the University of Chicago (288.50).
Rensselaer earned its top 20 ranking behind its two cross country teams as well as the football team's advancement to the national quarterfinals. Women's cross country placed 16th at the NCAA Championship Meet to earn 58.5 points and the men were a school record-tying 13th, which equates to 63 points. Football won two playoff games to reach the elite eight and earn 70 points.
RPI, which saw field hockey and men's soccer earn conference playoff berths, is followed in the Liberty League by RIT in 29th place (142.00 points), Ithaca College in 40th (123.00), Vassar College in 61st (78.00), Hobart & William Smith Colleges in 69th (73.00) and St. Lawrence University in 74th place (70).
Rensselaer's all-time best finish in the overall Learfield Directors' Cup standings is 37th place, which occurred in 1996-97. The Engineers also finished in the top 50 in 2003-04 (43rd) and last season (50th). They were 55th in 1995-96 and 56th in 2016-17. The final listing for the 2018-19 season is scheduled for release on June 12. The winter announcement takes place on March 28.
