Karina Bolton and
Dainara Veeder have been named captains of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's track & field team, it has been announced. This is the second season in that role for Bolton and the first for Veeder. They are both seniors.
A chemical engineering major, Bolton (Quakertown, PA / Quakertown) has run the mile, 1500 meters, 3000 meters, 5000 meters and 10000 meters for the Engineers. She finished fifth in the 10000 at the Liberty League Outdoor Championship as a freshman (40:55.11) before winning the event the following season (38:07.51). Bolton was second in the New York State Championship (college-best 38:01.15) that same season, which came after a runner-up finish in the 5000 meters at the indoor conference championship (18:47.06).
She twice competed in both the 3000 meters and 5000 meters during the 2017-18 indoor season, but did not run during outdoors due to injury.
A two-time captain of the cross country team, Bolton helped the team to four NCAA Championship Meets with a school-record finish of ninth place in 2015 and 10th place in 2017. Her best collegiate times were 18:12.5 on a 5K course (2017 Saratoga Invitational) and 21:47.0 in the 6K (2016 NCAA Atlantic Regional).
A mechanical engineering major, Veeder (Canajoharie, NY / Canajoharie) has competed in the 60, 100 and 400 Hurdles, while also running the 60 and 200-meter sprints as well as relays. She began her Rensselaer career with a second place finish in the 60H (9.92) and fourth in the 4x200 (1:50.55) at a meet at Middlebury College in 2016-17. She went on to place second in the relay at Dartmouth (1:52.44) and third at the Liberty League Championship (1:50.07). Veeder was also third in the 60 Hurdles at the conference meet (9.78).
A transfer from The College of Saint Rose, she won the 400 Hurdles (1:10.51) and finished second in both the 100H (16.06) and 4x100 (50.16) at the 2017 Upstate Outdoor Classic. Veeder went on to win the 4x100 (50.16) and 100H (16.15) at the Liberty League Championship.
Last season, she had a pair of top 3 finishes in indoor, including third in the 60H at the conference meet (9.57), before winning twice at Hamilton (100H, 400H) and placing second in two events (100H, 4x100) at the Capital District Classic.
As a team, the Engineers had five top 3 team finishes in 2017-18. The 2018-19 squad, which has 17 freshmen, 11 sophomores, 15 juniors and 13 seniors, began competition on Saturday at the UMass Boston Opener. The indoor season continues through the middle of March with the outdoor campaign beginning on March 23 in Baltimore.
