SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England University women's basketball team scored 24 points in the third quarter to break open a close game and the Golden Bears went on to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 69-54 in a non-league game. The Engineers drop to 6-3, while Western New England is now 7-2.
Leading 31-26 at the break, the Golden Bears held RPI scoreless for the first four minutes of the third quarter and three points in the first seven to take a 45-29 lead. The margin grew to 55-32 at the end of 30 minutes and the home team was not challenged in the fourth quarter.Â
The Engineers held a 22-14 edge in the fourth with
Ines Ortea scoring seven points and
Emily Vallee and
Elizabeth Eckhardt notching five apiece in the frame.
Eckhardt finished with a game-high 20 points, while Ortea scored 15 with nine rebounds. Vallee finished with five. Meghan Orbann scored 16 points with 15 rebounds for Western New England.
