COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Annie DeFrino recorded a game-high six points to lead the Colorado College women's lacrosse team to a 13-9 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers improve to 4-2 overall, while the Engineers drop to 1-1-1.
After the two teams traded a pair of goals early, DeFrino put the hosts up for good at 9:05 of the first half. The tally sparked a 3-0 Tigers run to go up 5-2 with 10:59 left in the opening stanza.Â
RPI freshman
Nora Molino put a halt to the run with her second goal of the game and third of the year with 5:15 left in the half. Steph Kelly answered exactly three minutes later to make it 6-3 Colorado College at the break. The Tigers held a narrow 16-13 edge in shots after 30 minutes, including 13-11 on goal.
Senior
Allie Claroni netted her third goal of the season less than two minutes into the second half, but CC came back with a 4-0 run to open up a 10-4 advantage. DeFrino had two tallies during that stretch.
The Engineers fought right back with a 4-0 run of their that took less than four minutes, cutting the deficit to 10-8 with 8:05 remaining in regulation. Junior
Maddy Aslansan collected two of her team-high four goals during the comeback effort, while
Lauren Guiry netted the other two.
DeFrino put an end to the RPI run with 2:36 to play and added another marker - her fifth of the game and 16th of the year - to make it 13-8 with 1:26 left.
Aslansan capped the scoring with 14 seconds to go, with an assist to Claroni.Â
Junior
Aleena Milinski (1-1-1) made 16 saves for the Engineers, while Alena Stern (13 saves) and Remy Wells (2 saves) combined for 15 at the other end of the field.
Rensselaer is back in action on Wednesday against Mount Holyoke (1pm ET) in Colorado Springs, while the Tigers host the Lyons on Friday (12pm ET).
