BRADENTON, Fla. - Junior
Cliff Kigar recorded seven points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a 26-5 victory over The University of Massachusetts Boston on Tuesday afternoon at the IMG Academy. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-1 overall, while the Beacons drop to 1-2. The 25 goals are the most by an RPI team since March 3, 2010 against Mount Saint Mary.
RPI scored the game's first 23 goals, including 10 in the first quarter and six in the second.
Kigar got the scoring started just nine seconds into the game, taking a feed from faceoff man
Tyler Hancock and sticking it home past UMass Boston starting goalie Alex Fawcett. Zach Lucas then buried two straight goals in a span of 14 seconds for a 3-0 lead. A Kigar man-up goal six minutes in made it 4-0.
The Engineers then saw five different players find the back of the net, before Kigar potted Rensselaer's 10th goal of the quarter up a man.
Kigar then started the second quarter with a man-up tally to make it 11-0, before
Parker Jean netted his first goal of the year. Back-to-back man up tallies from Kigar extended the RPI advantage to 14-0, with
Siyon Lowe chipping in with a man-down goal with 41 seconds left in the half.
Connor Schnapp's first collegiate tally ended the scoring in the opening half.
Rensselaer scored the first seven goals of the second half, including first goals from
Nicholas Colucci,
Nick LeSaint and
Jon Felix.
UMass-Boston got on the board 55 seconds into the fourth on Clay Arnold's seventh goal of the season. Kroy Arnold and Conor Lenfest made it a 3-0 run for the Beacons, making it a 23-3 game.
Ryan Cole scored with 8:26 left in the game, but Kroy Arnold answered with a man-up tally for UMass-Boston. Felix then scored his second and third goals of the game, before Clay Arnold potted the Beacon's final goal with 14 seconds on the clock.
Kigar was aided offensively by Lucas (2 goals, 2 assists), Basterache (1 goal, 3 assists) and Schnapp (2 goals, 2 assists), who all had four.
Parker Smith made three saves in the first half to earn the win in goal, while
Brian Doughty and
Jack Cusworth combined to stop seven in the second.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit Bard College (12pm). UMass-Boston takes on Nichols College on Thursday in Davenport, Fla. (6pm).
