CLERMONT, Fla. - Rensselaer ended its four game win streak on Wednesday afternoon with a 14-9 loss to Bethel University and a 4-0 loss to Wesleyan University.
Sophomores
Maddie Provencher and
Allie Hunt led the Engineers on offense combining for six hits, a double, five RBI's and four runs. The Royals' Jana Roste was one triple away from completing the cycle with a single, a double and two homers. The left fielder ended the game with six RBI's and three runs.
Rensselaer (6-4) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when senior
Christine White scored off a Provencher single up the middle. Hunt then added a second run on a wild pitch. Bethel (5-5) responded in the bottom of the inning when Jana Roste scored off a Wendy Robert RBI followed by a Hannah Schmi homer to left center.
With the score tied 2-2, the Royals took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second with an Allie Fauth run courtesy of a Jamie Axelbe double to right center. Bethel added a fourth when Axelbe scored of a Mariah Uphof RBI.
RPI came back in the top of the third when Hunt singled to the shortstop to bring sophomore
Cam Caswell home. Provencher and Hunt then scored the game tying and go-ahead runs to make the score 5-4 off a
Kacie Herity single to left field.
In the bottom of the third, Bethel scored six unearned runs for the third lead change of the ball game. Roste lead the inning with a two out grand slam over the centerfield fence.
With the Royals leading 10-5, Caswell hit a double to left center in the top of the fourth to get sophomore
Veronica DeStefano. Caswell then cut the lead to 10-7 off a Hunt single to right field. Provencher followed up Caswell's double with one of her own to right field to bring in White and Hunt.
Bethel extended their 10-9 lead in the bottom of the fifth with Axelbe scoring off a Cassidy Abbo triple to left field. Abbo then scored off an Uphof single followed by a two run Roste homer to centerfield.
With the score at 14-9, the Royals' Hannah Schmidt held the Engineers hitless to garner the win. Schmidt (5-4) was credited with the win on relief after pitching six innings with three strikeouts. Rensselaer's
Sarah Harms (6-2) picked up the loss with with two strikeouts and four earned runs against.
In the second game with Wesleyan (1-0), RPI pitcher
Jaime Cleasby held the Cardinals scoreless until Rielly Wieners scored in the top of the fourth. Wesleyan continued to add one run per inning for the remainder of the contest. Alyssa DaSilva and Ay Jay Mulholland both scored off RBI singles from Olivia Gorman, Wieners, and Marina Williams to secure the 4-0 win.
Wesleyan's Julie McDonald (1-0) was credited with the complete game win with six strikeouts on 131 pitches. Cleasby (0-2) threw her first complete game of the season with two strikeouts, but picked up the loss.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow for their final day of spring break. Rensselaer is set to take on Roger Williams (9am) and Hamilton (11am) at the Minneola Athletic Complex.
